CBSE Class 10 Board Exams 2026: The Class 10 CBSE board examinations are set to commence on February 17, 2026, with an anticipated participation of over 26 lakh students. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has implemented a dual-board examination system for Class 10 students starting from the academic year 2026, in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
This framework enables students to retake their Class 10 board examinations to either enhance their scores or to pass any subjects they may have failed. This year, the second round of board exams is scheduled to take place from May 15 to June 1, 2026.
It is crucial to understand the number of subjects that can be attempted twice under this new system. In response to an inquiry from The Indian Express during an exclusive interview, CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bharadwaj stated, “Under the scheme, a student can appear for improvement in a maximum of three subjects in the second examination.
Which Board Examinations’ marks Will Be Considered, First or Second?
If a student takes both the Class 10 board examinations in a given year, “the higher score from the two examinations will be used to calculate the final result,” stated the CBSE Exam Controller.
“The second Board examination is optional. Students may opt to take it only if they wish to enhance their scores. Parents are encouraged not to exert undue pressure on their children to take the second examination if there is no need for improvement,” he further explained.
The Controller of Examinations also cautioned students against viewing the second examination as a “backup option.”
“Students are required to participate in the first examination. The second exam serves as a chance to better their performance from the first attempt. CBSE recommends that students prepare diligently for the first exam and not presume that the second attempt will serve as a safety net,” he remarked.
What Are the Consequences If a Student Fails in Certain Subjects in the First Exam?
“Students who do not pass in two subjects during the first examination will be categorized as compartment students and permitted to take the second examination,” the Controller of Examinations stated.
“Conversely, students who fail or do not take three or more subjects will not qualify for the second examination. They will have the opportunity to participate in the main Board examinations in 2027,” he added.
