Paper pattern

The examination will consist of two sections featuring objective type multiple-choice questions. The questions in Part 1 will evaluate the teaching and research aptitude of the candidate. This section will include a total of 50 questions, each worth 100 marks. Section B will focus on the subject chosen by the candidate and will assess their domain knowledge. This section will contain a total of 100 questions, with a maximum of 200 marks available.

Marking Scheme

Candidates are required to select one option as the correct answer to respond to a question. Each question is valued at two marks. For every correct answer, candidates will receive two marks. There will be no negative marking for incorrect answers. No marks will be awarded for questions that are unanswered, attempted, or marked for review.

While every effort will be made to ensure that each question has a single unique answer, should it be discovered that a question has multiple correct options, the following procedures will be implemented:

  • If more than one option is deemed correct, then two marks will be granted only to those who have selected any of the correct options.
  • If all options are found to be correct, then two marks will be awarded to all candidates who have attempted the question.
  • If none of the options are correct, or if a question is determined to be erroneous or is dropped, then two marks will be given only to those candidates who have attempted the question. This may occur due to human or technical errors.

The UGC NET examination is conducted to assess the eligibility of candidates for the ‘Award of Junior Research Fellowship’, ‘Appointment as Assistant Professor’, ‘Appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to PhD’, and ‘Admission to PhD only’ in Indian universities and colleges.
