Sales of electric vehicles in India are consistently increasing year after year. While companies like Tata already provide several EV models and have plans for further growth, others, such as Maruti, have yet to enter this market segment. With SUVs gaining popularity worldwide, car manufacturers are increasingly focusing on the Indian market, where the drive for electrification is also altering their strategies. Numerous manufacturers are gearing up to launch new electric models in the upcoming years, with 2026 expected to see five eagerly awaited EV introductions.

Maruti Suzuki e Vitara

The forthcoming Maruti e Vitara is anticipated to be the first new EV to debut next year, with sales projected to commence in January. This SUV will be available with two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options: a 49 kWh unit paired with a single-motor configuration, and a larger 61 kWh pack offered in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. The smaller battery provides a range of up to 346 km, while the 61 kWh option increases this to 428 km (WLTP). However, the launch of the AWD version in India is still unconfirmed.

Tata Sierra EV

The Tata Sierra.ev is expected to be launched by March 2026, shortly after the internal combustion engine (ICE) version becomes available in showrooms. The all-electric Sierra will come in single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, enhancing its off-road capabilities from the beginning. Taking design inspiration from the recently launched ICE Sierra, the EV is likely to include features such as a frunk, one-pedal driving, vehicle-to-load (V2L) bi-directional charging, and several other improvements that set it apart from its internal combustion engine equivalent.

Mahindra XUV 3XO EV

Mahindra is developing a fully electric version of the XUV 3XO, aimed directly at competing with the Tata Nexon.ev. Smaller and more budget-friendly than the underperforming XUV400, the upcoming EV is expected to be equipped with a 35 kWh NMC battery pack, providing an estimated range of around 400 km. Mahindra plans to launch this new entry-level electric SUV in the first half of 2026, thereby expanding its electric vehicle lineup.

Kia Syors EV

The Kia Syros EV is anticipated to make its debut in India by March 2026 and has recently been seen undergoing testing for the first time. Spy photographs have shown that the electric Syros will closely resemble the design of the ICE version, incorporating EV-specific elements such as a charging port located on the front right fender. Interestingly, the test vehicle was equipped with green brake calipers, which are usually found on Kia’s performance models like the EV9 GT. It is expected that the interior and features will be similar to those of the ICE Syros. Although technical specifications have not yet been revealed, this competitor to the Tata Nexon EV is reported to utilize Hyundai’s K1 platform.

Hyundai Inster EV

Hyundai is set to introduce its competitor to the Tata Punch EV in India by late 2026. This compact electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, will be manufactured at the Sriperumbudur facility using locally sourced Exide batteries. Based on the global Inster EV, it will provide battery options of 42kWh and 49kWh, paired with motors producing 97hp or 115hp, achieving WLTP ranges of 300km and 355km respectively. Anticipated features include dual 10.25-inch displays, Level 2 ADAS, automatic climate control, and a 360-degree camera with blind-spot monitoring.
